Mandala

Because this quilt is due today I show you my third white quilt. (the second will follow soon). The group Art quilts around the world shows today what their members did with the subject Mandala. I felt it was sort of difficult because a Dutch group had just done the same and I had seen results. So I decided to continue with my white-fabrics-quilts. By the way I am totally inspired by this book: Stitching to dye in Quilt art, by C June Barns) Dsc_5747_derde_witte

This time I included orange-red and stamped fabrics. It was done by hand, but the quilting was done by machine.

Dsc_5790mandala_details  I also included baticwax on the orange dots and tiny marks in between the orange triangles to avoid exposure to the paint.

When totally finished it goes into a dyebath:  Als het helemaal klaar is gaat het in het verfbad:Dsc_5792_mandala_verven

then after rinsing washing drying

na het spoelen wassen en drogen

color/kleur

This is the first quilt which went into a dye-bath. For now it is allright, but maybe I will paint over it :-)

White/wit

These cones are part of a collection I have been gathering. All natural fibers and white or off-white. Allemaal natuurlijke vezels in wit of gebroken wit:

Dsc_5662_cones There is also a collection of fabrics. Cotton, silk, damask, flannel, linen. Some bought new, others found stored away, and now ready for new life. / Er is ook een verzameling stoffen. Katoen, zijde, damast, flanel, linnen.

So far I have made two small quilts. Each one is about 12 square inch. Now they are ready to be dyed. I have done several experiments with the dye I have here, but this didnot work out well. The colors didnot turn out the way I wanted them to.  So the quilts will stay white for a bit longer.

Poppy/Klaproos

Dsc_5552_klaproos

This was made for one of the members of Tegendraads. She wanted to have poppys, go take a look at all the different poppys on the tegendraads site.  The leaves of the poppy are made of painted silk. Underneath is a photocopy of a picture I took of a poppy. On the copy vliesofix (an adhesive) was ironed and underneath iron-on-interfacing. Then it was crumpled to soften the paper. Some lines were made more apparent with a black finemarker. The red silk was put on top of this and it was sandwiched with batting and fabric. Then with brown thread it was quilted. In the middle some silk was cut away.

earrings

I have been busy attending workshops. On friday Linda Colsh was the teacher and it was all about design with black and white.

The next day Cherilyn Martin taught us to emboss the surface with UTEE. This material needs to be melted and then you can pour it over fabric, stamp it, and more. My best results are these earrings:

when or where sea and land meet

Pictures of the challenge for Artquilts Around the World are due today. The subject is: when or where sea and land meet. I thought of harbours and busy trading. I collected many pictures like these:

I made a scetch of a place in the harbour and inverted this into fabric. It was machinequilted and then silver paintstick was used on the containers to  give a older look. A chain was added to complete the quilt.

postcards

Every now and then I swap postcards. I received a nice red card from Linda with a screenprint on it consisting old houses from Amsterdam. In return I made a postcard for her and I hope it is on time for her birthday:

I made two more, a little bit different:

rose

Last tuesday Tegendraads had its monthly meeting. This time Ria was the lucky one to receive a small quilt from everybody. Her theme was rose or roses and the results are already on the site of Tegendraads. I have been busy  experimenting with crayons, inspired by an article from Quilting Arts Magazine, so that is how this one developed.

this and that

I have made more baskets. I have a total of 94 now, so I am getting somewhere with this ;-) These are the new ones:

Dsc_5123_mandjes

I also have been busy making a new quilt for on our couch. Our oldest daughter took a quilt with her to her dorm. So we need a new one. I have shown the fabrics here before. It was too much altogether, so I devided the fabrics in two parts: New York by night and New York by day. Now I have two tops, but it will be one quilt. The tops are waiting to be sandwiched and quilted.
